GNS science team: 'Gone fast': Dr Mike Balsamo describes the scale of damage sustained by wind farm

GNS: Waning strength of the high wind environment in Victoria is now expected to persist for some time.

The state's Department of Energy, Climate Change and Water Resources is urging power users to take appropriate precautionary actions before conditions deteriorate further.

Dr Mike Balsamo from the GNS Science Team, said the intensity of the high winds, together with the increasing frequency of wind surges in Victoria, were expected to continue over the weekend, including today.

He said it appeared that most Victoria's severe thunderstorms would be on the move tonight and will be a more pronounced phenomenon during the rest of the weekend.

"While there are areas where high pressure systems continue to develop, many areas are expected to remain more calm. This means this will probably be a time of reduced intensity but still substantial and widespread wind damage," Dr Balsamo said.

A major storm warning remains in effect for Melbourne, Queensland and the Southern Sunshine Coast until midnight for winds of 70 kilometres per hour with dangerous wind gusts up to 130 kilometres an hour.

Wind-related injury could stretch beyond those areas.

Dr Balsamo said there was still time for those in the power grid with power generating equipment to make plans to protect themselves from the potential danger.

Dr Balsamo said the conditions, which would also see some wind farm construction halted, meant that for a time the low pressure system over Victoria should diminish.

"I would say within hours we will have some weakening of the low, but for several days we will still have some severe high and dangerous winds, which will impact the power plants in those areas," he said.

A high pressure system over Melbourne is expected to dissipate and the low will strengthen, leaving areas in Victoria with more moderate wind conditions, he said.

The power system could be weakening rapidly, the state's Director of Public Prosecutions Office said, while the high tide warning will remain in place for Victoria.

"As the system continues to weaken and the wind intensity wanes it could become very difficult for wind power plants to generate power at any time, resulting in potential damage to structures or the community that they have constructed," Mr Vesely said.

"The situation is complex and is dynamic, and it is important for people who have information about wind energy and wind resources to monitor the situation and take appropriate precautions."

Report critical of tax evasion causes angst discomfort at ato think-tank

Tax evasion, critics say, is the biggest tax avoidance racket in Europe.

Yet a new think-tank has claimed tax evasion is one of the key ways wealthy Germans are able to enjoy their lifestyle while living on less than half the national salary.

The Wertikaufrage think-tank said that Germany's economy was increasingly focused on income generation rather than productivity and that the situation made it easy to exploit this phenomenon.

And that in turn meant that tax avoidance was a more effective way of dealing with tax disputes than other methods.

The head of the Wertikaufrage think-tank, Dieter Leibenrausg, said: "There's a problem in Germany: how can the tax-sabotage companies have all these low-paying jobs without being required to pay any tax at all?

"If German tax avoidance is so easy for them, why don't the rest of us get in on it too?

"We need to deal with this issue head on."

Mr Leibenrausg's comments were published on Wednesday evening.

In 2007, the Wertikaufrage think-tank published a study in which they estimated that roughly one fifth of German workers, or around 100,000 people, pay no tax at all on profits earned for their company, while they benefit from some kind of capital gain.

For example, German companies earning no less than €1m per year would have to pay about €800m in taxes to the government - a figure that is now on the increase.

Mr Leibenrausg noted that it took a country with a GDP of about €400bn to pay in just a mere €7bn per year.
